About Me

Daren Dean: Daren Dean is a writer out of Missouri. His work has appeared in Fiction Southeast, Image, Chattahoochee Review, Story South, and others. His story "Bring Your Sorrow Over Here" was selected as runner-up in Yemassee's William Richey Short Fiction contest by Judge George Singleton. His poem "Exhalation" is in the anthology: "Deck: Writing from the Creative Writing Program at UNC Wilmington"(2003). His undergraduate degree is from Central Methodist University and he holds the MFA in Creative Writing from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. He has taught writing and literature at several colleges including Westminster College, William Woods University, and the University of Missouri. He has also worked in acquistions and marketing at the University of Missouri Press. He is currently doing freelance pubicity work for Gladys Swan, the author of 3 novels and 6 collections of short stories, and her collection: THE TIGER'S EYE: NEW & SELECTED STORIES (Serving House Books, 2011). FAR BEYOND THE PALE

In the darkly comic novel Nathan "Honey Boy" Kimbrough narrates a boy's search for a father and his mother's search for a man in 1970s Missouri. Honey Boy is a thirteen-year-old, four-letter spouting, pistol-packing kid who is determined to learn something about the art of thieving swag from Kingdom County's resident outlaw: Vaughn, a natural born killer with the conscience of a sociopath. What follows is a conclusion so violent that even Vaughn might wonder if he hasn't done his job too well. Vigilantes surround the outlaw at his favorite tavern with deer rifles and revolvers drawn in a modern southern novel with an explosive climax.
